The 2019 Lexus NX, a midsize luxury SUV, recently earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for models built after Jan. 2019. The NX  earns good ratings in all six IIHS crashworthiness evaluations. The good rating in the Institute's newest test — the passenger-side small overlap crash test — applies to models built after January 2019, when structural reinforcements were incorporated into the passenger side of the vehicle to provide better protection in passenger-side small overlap frontal crashes. The NX has a standard front crash prevention system that rates superior. In IIHS track tests, the NX avoided collisions at 12 and 25 mph. The SUV has two available headlight options. Apple has acquired autonomous driving startup Drive.ai in an effort to bolster its self-driving car ambitions, according to CNET. The startup -- once valued at more than $200 million -- shut down its operations in mid-June, according to a California regulatory filing.  Axios said Apple confirmed the acquisition, but the site didn't report terms of the deal. Last July, Drive.ai launched its first self-driving shuttle service in Frisco, Texas. Article originally posted on FenderBender. Fiat Chrysler is recalling nearly 343,000 Ram pickup trucks worldwide because the air bags may not inflate in a crash, reported The Detroit Free Press. Fiat Chrysler says a software error can inadvertently disable the air bags and a device that tightens seat belts before a crash. FCA doesn't know of any crashes or injuries and says the problem is rare. The recall covers the Ram 1500 mainly from the 2019 model year, although the company has a small number of 2020 models. Owners will be notified starting July 20. Dealers will either replace computers that control the air bags or update software.

May 31, 2019—Ford is trying to reduce its carbon footprint by recycling plastic bottles and using them to make vehicle parts, according to a report from CNBC. The automaker uses an average of 300 recycled bottles per vehicle to make the underbody shields for all of their cars and SUVs as well as the wheel liners on F-Series trucks. The bottles are shredded into small pieces and sold to suppliers that turn them into fiber used to make sheets of plastic. Ford then uses these sheets to make the underbody cover for its vehicles. According to the report, Ford said plastic bottles are ideal for automotive parts because they are lightweight, which improves the aerodynamics of the car. Ford has used recycled plastic as far back as the 1990s.

Honda says the vehicle’s side camera mirror system, as seen on the prototype, will be a standard option when the car enters production. While some side cameras have drawn criticism for performance in certain conditions, Honda says its system — which offers both normal and wide-angle views — will improve visibility in bad weather and at night. The carmaker notes the system has undergone extensive testing to ensure no glare, and the design of the camera shouldn’t give drivers any problems in rain or snow, the company said. The reduced drag — a 90 percent improvement over conventional mirrors — results in a “3.8 percent improvement for the entire vehicle, contributing toward the models overall efficiency and range.”

General Motors is issuing a recall on 210,628 vehicles in the United States and 19,385 vehicles in Canada due to a soft, spongy brake pedal, reported Fortune. The recall impacts hundreds of thousands of 2018 and 2019 models of Chevrolet Bolt, Cruze, Equinox, Impala, Malibu, and Volt as well as Buick Cadillac XTS, LaCrosse, Regal; and GMC Terrain. Ford Motor Co. dropped a bit of a bombshell when announcing its first-quarter financial results, declaring that it will phase out its slow-selling sedans in North America. By 2020, nearly 90 percent of the automaker’s North American lineup will consist of trucks, SUVs and commercial vehicles, Ford said. “Given declining consumer demand and product profitability, the company will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America,” Ford said in an April 25 news release. By 2020, the only models in Ford’s car lineup will be the iconic Mustang and the new Focus Active crossover, the latter of which is set to debut next year. “The company is also exploring new ‘white space’ vehicle silhouettes that combine the best attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space and versatility,” Ford said. For first-quarter 2018, Ford reported revenue of $42 billion, up 7 percent from first-quarter 2017, and net income of $1.7 billion, up 9 percent year-over-year. “We are committed to taking the appropriate actions to drive profitable growth and maximize the returns of our business over the long term,” said Jim Hackett, Ford president and CEO. “Where we can raise the returns of underperforming parts of our business by making them more fit, we will.
